ARCHBISHOP NEILL WELCOMES NEW RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend John Neill, has warmly welcomed the establishment of a Russian Orthodox Church in Dublin.

St Peter and St Paul Russian Orthodox Church will be consecrated on Sunday 9 February 2003. It is located in the former Church of Ireland Harold's Cross Parish Church.

Archbishop Neill says "The consecration has particular ecumenical significance. It represents the importance of the Russian Orthodox Church in our midst. This is a growing and vibrant congregation of Russian Christians and of members of other Eastern Churches belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate.

"We extend a warm welcome to them, as indeed we do to the many other groups of Christians, both Eastern and Western, who have come to live in the dioceses. They will enrich us and we look forward to knowing them and sharing with them. How wonderful to see a church that we ourselves no longer use being used for the glory of God."

Harold's Cross Church was built in 1837 to cater for mainly for the needs of soldiers from Portobello Barracks. It closed for public worship in June 2001.
