ARCHBISHOP NEILL WELCOMES THE SPECIAL OLYMPIANS

On behalf of the Church of Ireland community, I would like to welcome the Special Olympians and their supporters and all who are involved in Special Olympics World Games 2003. The Special Olympic Flame is a symbol of the spirit of the Games. Flames have long symbolised hope, energy, warmth and light; and within Christianity, flames symbolise the Holy Spirit, giving life and power. So it is in this vein, we welcome the flame, as we welcome ambassadors of hope, energy, warmth, light, life and empowerment.

One of the characteristics of a flame is that in giving of itself, it is not diminished; may we who welcome you, and you who come to compete and support, give of ourselves generously, enriching each other by our shared experience.
