In all Christian traditions, the word “Sin” is less heard than it once was. Private Confession, common in the Roman Catholic tradition, and well received in many parts of the Anglican tradition has become significantly less frequent. Even the liturgical confession of sins has been fairly sanitised in most traditions, and words of sorrow are quickly passed over. I find it interesting sometimes that those writing their own liturgies, especially for young people, sometimes find themselves using the old prayer of confession from the 1926 Book of Common Prayer.

'Sirius did not hate Kreacher,' said Dumbledore to Harry Potter, 'He regarded him as a servant unworthy of much interest or notice. Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.' Whether you are a Harry Potter fan or not, the above quotation might set you thinking as it did me when I read it, thinking about the relationship there is among the three words which the headmaster outlines to the pupil: indifference, neglect, outright dislike and also how fact might yet speak louder than fiction. Because fiction can and must be an acute and incisive a critic of reality.
