Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal has sent £10,000 Emergency Aid to help with the Venezuela Earthquake Emergency and is encouraging parishes and individuals to support the emergency appeal set up by its partner, Christian Aid.

Bishops’ Appeal has shared the following information from Christian Aid and the Disasters Emergency Committee of which it is a member:

We must act quickly.
Together with the 14 other charities that make up the DEC, we’re launching a UK–wide appeal to meet the escalating needs of people affected by the earthquakes. Christian Aid colleagues are already working hard with our partners to assess the needs of our neighbours in Venezuela and ensure that our emergency response is exactly what and where it needs to be.

Overview of the Crisis

On Thursday 24 June at 18:04 local time, two powerful earthquakes struck north–central Venezuela near Morón (Carabobo State). Measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude and occurring just 39 seconds apart, this rare “doublet” earthquake caused widespread devastation.

Strong tremors were felt across Caracas, Carabobo, La Guaira, Miranda and Aragua, as well as neighbouring Colombia and parts of the Caribbean. The second quake is the strongest recorded in Venezuela since 1900.

Aftershocks have continued, hampering rescue efforts and increasing risks to affected communities.

Impact and Humanitarian Situation (correct at 5pm Tuesday 30 June 2026)

Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the scale of the disaster is significant and still unfolding:

1,700 confirmed deaths

5034 people injured

15800 affected people

68,900 people reported
     unaccounted for

Over 9,000 buildings
     collapsed nationwide

24 countries supporting response
efforts with more than 2,700 rescue personnel and 86 canine units

The government has declared a State of Emergency, and the number of casualties is expected to rise as more areas are reached.

Up to 6.76
million people may be affected, including an estimated 680,000 children in need of humanitarian assistance.

Damage and Disruption

Some of the most severe damage has occurred in La Guaira, particularly in coastal urban areas such as Catia La Mar and Caraballeda, where dense housing and older infrastructure have increased vulnerability.

Across the affected regions:

Homes, businesses and
     public buildings have collapsed

Roads and transport routes
     are damaged

Electricity,
telecommunications and water systems are disrupted

Health services and
     hospital access are severely affected

Structural damage has
forced the temporary closure of Simón Bolívar International Airport

Many people are now sheltering in open spaces, vehicles, schools and temporary shelters due to fears of further collapse.

Humanitarian Needs

Affected communities urgently require:

Safe shelter and essential
     household items

Food and access to clean
     water

Healthcare and sanitation
     services

Protection support and
     mental health care

Those most at risk include children, older people, people with disabilities,
women–headed households, and communities already impacted by Venezuela’s ongoing socioeconomic crisis.

Response and Partnerships

Christian Aid is working through its ACT Alliance partners, supporting local organisations already responding on the ground. These include:

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe

Swiss Church Aid (HEKS)

Lutheran World Federation

Faith communities play a vital role in response efforts, offering trusted networks that provide practical and pastoral support and help reach the most vulnerable.

How Donations Will Help

It is not too late to save lives and prevent further suffering. Donations will enable partners to provide:

Water hygiene kits
     (including purification tablets and filters)

Dignity kits for adolescent
     girls (including sanitary products)

Food supplies such as
     grains, lentils, oil and salt

Cash assistance so families
     can meet urgent needs

Suggested donation impacts:

£10 – can provide dignity
kits, including underwear and sanitary products, for adolescent girls.

£20 – food or cash support
     for a household

£50 – can provide water
hygiene kits that contain water purification tablets and a water filter.

£100 – helps provide food
(including lentils for protein, grains, cooking oil, salt).

Message from Christian Aid

Carlos E. Mejia, Head of Impact, MCC LAC, Christian Aid, said:

Venezuela is facing immense human suffering. These earthquakes have deepened an already difficult situation, causing widespread destruction and loss.

The impact is not just measured in numbers, but in lives, families and communities now facing grief and uncertainty.

Through our partnerships with faith–based networks, we are working to channel solidarity and support from communities in the UK to those affected. This is a tangible expression of hope in the face of tragedy.

Prayer

God of all compassion,
We hold before you the people of Venezuela.

The scale of the disaster is great and the pain is deep.
Be close to those who mourn,
and sustain those awaiting news of loved ones.

Strengthen and protect rescuers, medical teams and aid workers.
Be present with those still trapped,
bringing comfort and hope.

Help us to respond with generosity and compassion,
and to stand alongside those in need, now and in the months ahead.

Amen

A lady called Audrey and her world–wide impact!

The choices we make in life and what happens after our death can have incredible significance. When the Bishops’ Appeal advisory committee heard that Audrey – a widow from the south west of Dublin – had left a very generous legacy to the Bishops’ Appeal charity they decided to honour her memory by supporting five life–changing projects in different parts of the world.

– A school for disabled children in Egypt, enabling almost double the number of children to benefit from therapeutic services, specialist therapy and learning spaces, and life skills education – sponsored by CMSI.

– Women in Honduras, who will be given practical support as well as spiritual encouragement, as they heal from domestic abuse and are provided with the training needed to provide a sustainable income for their families, overcoming hunger and supporting green economy projects – with training and support provided by Christian Aid’s partner in the country.

– Support for Balassan Clinic, a church–run medical clinic in Lebanon, which provides free or highly subsidised medicine, imaging and laboratory tests, minor surgical procedures and primary treatments, Audrey’s legacy is providing funds to cover its running costs for four years, supported through Tearfund Ireland. The clinic describes themselves as a “church–based medical and counselling centre, serving everyone with Christlike love and reflecting the healing touch of Jesus.”

– Training and support for indigenous lay leaders and those training for ordained ministry in the Grand Chaco region of Northern Argentina (with SAMS Ireland), strengthening local churches and resilient community leadership across the Chaco where the Wichi indigenous people face huge challenges.

– Helping to build a 3–classroom block (plus desks, chairs, materials and a toilet block) for a nursery school in eastern Uganda, to allow 113 nursery school children aged 3–6 to benefit from Fields of Life “I am Educated” programme each year.

These projects – all nominated by our trusted partners CMSI, Christian Aid, Tearfund Ireland, SAMS Ireland and Fields of Life – will be delivered by people who had a track record of delivering similar significant–sized projects in their areas, safely, effectively and within budget.

One lady – five projects – hundreds, indeed thousands, of lives changed for the good. Look out for updates from each project in the months ahead.

Pancakes & Prayer aims higher for Lent 2026

The Pancakes & Prayer Lent Campaign is back for 2026! Last year, Bishops’ Appeal and the Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD) partnered with Fields of Life and with youth groups across Ireland, prayed, and fundraised an incredible £8,300/€9,500.

You supported 3,926 young people in South Sudan to enjoy a daily meal at school and be able to say: “I am fed”. Thank you!

This year, we would love to reach up to 7,300 more young people across 15 schools in South Sudan who don’t yet have food or clean water at school. Together we can help them to not only say “I am fed” but also “I am watered”.

Schoolchildren in South Sudan involved in the Fields of Life Thrive programme. Photo credit: Fields of Life.

How can you make a difference?

For as little as £2.50/€3.00 you could help feed a child in South Sudan for a year, by training schools to grow their own crops. Or for £30/€34, you could give a child the gift of safe, clean water through rainwater tanks or drilling boreholes.

Youth groups and schools can take part in Pancakes & Prayer in three steps, shared in the leaders’ pack:

Sign up to register your interest and receive a video and PowerPoint slides

Get involved by giving the cost of something given up for Lent and/or hosting a fundraising event

Make a donation to Bishops’ Appeal online – at https://bishopsappeal.ireland.anglican.org/donate - or by requesting details for making a bank transfer by email at bishopsappeal@ireland.anglican.org

Fundraising ideas include pancake parties, youth group Lent challenges (to given up favourite sweet treats for 40 days), a Mothers’ Day coffee morning, bake sale or sponsored challenge.

And don’t forget that Mothers’ Day is coming up on Sunday, 15th March!

Schoolchildren in South Sudan involved in the Fields of Life Thrive programme. Photo credit: Fields of Life.

Pray for schools

Young people taking part in Pancakes & Prayer are also encouraged to pray for two schools in South Sudan:

Bishop Morona Memorial Secondary School, in Maridi, has 187 pupils and is led by headteacher Faragi Alison John (its motto is ‘Together we can make a difference’)

St Mary’s Primary School, in Ibba, has 414 pupils with Samson Dobili Aman as its headteacher and the motto of ‘Producing Quality Education’

A devotional also helps participants to connect with the story of a girl whose opportunities in everyday life have been transformed by Pancakes & Prayer and learn from the teaching of Jesus, in Matthew chapter 25, about care for people who are vulnerable.

The full leaders’ guide, which includes all of the above information, is available from the Church of Ireland website at www.churchofireland.org/resources

The Church of Ireland’s Bishops’ Appeal for World Aid and Development and the Board for Ministry with Children and Families are delighted to announce that £4,164 (equivalent to €4,796) has been raised through their Advent fundraising campaign – Generosity & Gingerbread – to help SAMS Ireland in its work to make life better for homeless people in Chile and vulnerable girls in Brazil.

A cityscape in Brazil, where the Safe House project gives girls new hope for the future. Photo credit: SAMS Ireland.

The two winners from the Houses of Hope competition for building gingerbread houses –Eben from Offaly and Alice from Fermanagh – were chosen by the Revd Geoff Hamilton, Mission Director with SAMS Ireland and Carolina Schmidt, from the Anglican Church of Chile (Iglesia Anglicana de Chile).

Congratulations to Eben and Alice on their winning houses!

Carolina thanked all who took part for raising £2,082 / €2,398 for the homeless ministry. “This gift,” she remarked, “will provide around 110 blankets, 360 wholesome meals, 150 T–shirts, and 375 toiletries packs. It also allows the local Anglican Church to plan ahead and provides real encouragement to the volunteer team. Because of your prayerful and financial support, lives are being touched and basic needs are met with dignity and care.”

Rosie and Stu Bayford, who co–ordinate the Safe House project in Brazil, added their thanks for the Bishops’ Appeal donation – also £2,082 / €2,398 – as this will allow the project to “continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of young girls who have come from exploited and difficult circumstances.”

<img src="https://www.churchofireland.org/cmsfiles/images/news/committee/2026/Volunteers-Santiago-Chile.jpg" alt="Volunteers at the ministry to homeless people in Santiago, Chile.
The amount raised provides roughly 200 days of nourishing meals, 150 essential items of clothing, 150 weeks of transport to school, and 70 sessions with psychologists. Rosie and Stu explained: “This support strengthens the girls’ physical health, nurtures emotional well–being, and reminds the team here that people in Ireland are standing with them. Thank you, and may God bless you richly in the future as you resource other people and projects.”

Gingerbread & Generosity Banner

Welcome to Gingerbread and Generosity – a new Advent project in association with SAMS Ireland, Bishops’ Appeal, and the Board for Ministry with Children and Families
(BCFM).

We hope that families, children’s groups, church groups and perhaps some schools will be excited to take part in this new Advent programme within the Church of Ireland. During the Advent and Christmas season, we are looking forward to celebrating the birth of Christ. And each year we remember that when Jesus was born, it was in a stable because there was no room in the inn.

The Son of God knew what it was like to be homeless, to be vulnerable. Jesus gave up all the glory of heaven because he loved us, every single human person who has ever lived. He came to give us hope and a future.

“This Advent and Christmas season, we invite you to include Gingerbread and Generosity as part of your parish and family celebrations,” says Hilary McClay, Education Advisor with Bishops’ Appeal. “With our theme – Houses of Hope – we are sharing the message that everyone needs a place to call home, and by focusing on two projects in South America where people who are homeless are cared for and supported by the local Anglican Church, and vulnerable young girls get a safe place to live and to recover from previous trauma.”

Resource Packs

To help bring the project to life, we have created two themed resource packs – one for churches and one for families. Both can be downloaded from the Church of Ireland Children and Families Ministry website at this link: https://cfm.ireland.anglican.org/houses-of-hope-gingerbread-and-generosity-2025

Within the church pack, there are outlines for services which could also be used in schools and in Sunday School contexts. We hope that children will be keen to get involved, and to pray for those who need a safe place to live – a House of Hope.

What could be more Christmassy than gingerbread men and gingerbread houses! Inside the packs you will find a variety of activities that you can use at home, at school or at church – please use them as they work best for you.

As part of the project there is a competition for the best gingerbread house we can find! So there is plenty of fun, along with the serious message that there are people who need a bit of help so that they have a House of Hope. Families are invited to share photos of their gingerbread creations for a chance to win a £50/€50 One4All voucher.

Each pack is filled with creative ideas, recipes, templates and activities to help you celebrate Advent with joy and purpose.

Support

A small amount of money can make a big difference and bring comfort and dignity to someone in need. For example, in Chile £16/€16 provides a quality blanket to keep someone warm through the cold nights. £10/€10 buys a T–shirt. £11/€11
gives someone a special Christmas meal with chicken, potatoes, rice, and a small gift. £5/€5 provides a simple but nourishing lunch of chicken, rice, and dessert. £5/€5 buys a toiletries pack. £5/€5 enables a child to receive a small gift, a reminder they’re not forgotten. £4/€4 buys underwear.

In the Safe House Project in Brazil, £7/€7 covers the cost for a girl’s food for the day. £7/€7
buys a basic item of clothing. £10/€10 covers the fuel needed to get the girls to school for a week. £30/€30 provides a session with a psychologist.

Your family and your church have the opportunity to make a donation (of £10/€10 or more) via the Bishops’ Appeal donations page – https://bishopsappeal.ireland.anglican.org/donate -
by choosing the Gingerbread and Generosity option. All the money raised will be sent via SAMS in the new year to support these two projects in Chile and Brazil.

Watch this space

More stories will be shared over the coming weeks to help promote the appeal – so look out for these across the Church of Ireland’s websites and social media channels.

The total raised by the Pancakes and Prayer Lent project has brought in enough money to feed almost 4,000 children in South Sudan for the next year. The project, run by the Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD) and the Bishops’ Appeal for World Aid and Development, encouraged youth groups and Sunday schools to get involved in praying for schools in South Sudan during Lent and raising funds – perhaps through giving something up, or by different initiatives within a parish or school community to contribute to the fundraising.

The money raised will be channelled through Fields of Life to provide plants and equipment for school gardens in South Sudan, so that the schoolchildren will be fed each day – and, as a result of the generosity of young people in Ireland, 3,980 children will now be fed.

Another Pancakes and Prayer fundraising campaign is planned for Lent next year so make sure you have your pans and ingredients ready to make a great difference again! The amounts raised in 2025 were £3,807 and €5,135 – therefore equivalent to around £8,300 or €9,500 in total when current exchange rates are taken into account.

Words of thanks for our young people

National Youth Officer Simon Henry remarked: “One of CIYD’s key tenets is partnership and it was brilliant to come together with Bishops’ Appeal and Fields of Life for this exciting project.

“We were blown away by the level of participation from young people, clergy and youth leaders. From youth groups to schools to Sunday morning services, there was so much engagement from all corners of the Church of Ireland and it has really encouraged us all, seeing young people engaged in responding to this need and knowing the impact it will have for the schools and children in South Sudan.”

Bishops’ Appeal’s Education Advisor, Hilary McClay, added: “Bishops’ Appeal is delighted by the wonderful response to our Pancakes and Prayer initiative, and encourages the young people of the Church of Ireland to continue to pray for the children in the schools in South Sudan.”

Naomi Campbell, Fields of Life’s Grants and Partnerships Manager, commented: “We are deeply grateful to the incredible young people across the Church of Ireland who took part in the Pancakes and Prayer Lent campaign. Your prayers and fundraising efforts are making a real and lasting difference for children in South Sudan. This is the world’s poorest country where tragically over 70 per cent of children are out of school.

“Since the start of the Thrive South Sudan project, the number of pupils across eight schools has increased by a remarkable 20 per cent, from 3,296 to 3,980! Hundreds of young people are in school today because of you!

“Thanks to your generosity, these schools are now skilled and equipped to sustainably grow their own food. Every child receives a daily meal, helping them stay in school, concentrate in class, and complete their education. Thank you for partnering with Fields of Life to let every child thrive!”

Readers can find out more about Fields of Life’s excellent work in East Africa through its website: www.fieldsoflife.org

South Sudan is home to around 11 million people and is the world’s newest country, having become independent in 2011. Around one in five of its population (22%) is aged under 14 years of age.

The Church of Ireland Diocese of Down and Dromore’s special collection to support humanitarian relief in Gaza and the wider Middle East has reached £28,065.91,
up from £10,000 received by the end of July.

Bishop David McClay has encouraged every parish in the diocese to give people the opportunity to support this collection. Funds for emergency aid through healthcare, food supplies and shelter will be channelled by the Bishops’ Appeal for World Aid and Development to Tearfund and the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem, who both work across the region.

The Diocese of Jerusalem runs one of the main hospitals in Gaza, Al–Ahli Arab Hospital, which cares for people from all communities and has recently been subject to several attacks (as outlined in the statement mentioned in notes to editors).

Tearfund is working in Gaza, the West Bank, and around the Middle East to provide support and vital supplies to people impacted by the conflict, including displaced communities.

Parishes and individuals still have the opportunity to contribute to the total, by sending donations to Diocese of Down and Dromore, Unit 1, 21 Old Channel Road, Belfast,
BT3 9DE – marked for Gaza and Middle East Appeal.

A special collection for the Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal for World Aid and Development by parishes in Down and Dromore to support people caught up in the violence in Gaza and the wider Middle East, has raised over £10,000.

Bishop David McClay encouraged every parish to give people the opportunity in June to support a special collection – which will be channelled by the Bishops’ Appeal to two trusted partners working on the ground in the Middle East, Tearfund and the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem (who both work across the region).

The money raised will support emergency aid to those most in need, through healthcare, food and shelter, and whatever support can be provided to those in such great need. The Diocese of Jerusalem runs one of the main hospitals in Gaza (Al–Ahli Arab Hospital)
which cares for people from all communities. Tearfund is working in Gaza, the West Bank and around the Middle East to provide support and vital supplies to people impacted by the conflict, including displaced communities.

Following the devastating earthquake last Friday (28th March) in South East Asia in which over two thousand lives have been lost, the Bishops’ Appeal Advisory Committee is sending emergency assistance of €10,000 (currently equivalent to £8,400) to Christian Aid’s appeal for Myanmar.

Parishes and individuals are encouraged to donate directly to Christian Aid to ensure that what we can give reaches those affected as swiftly as possible.

Bishop Ferran Glenfield, who chairs Bishops’ Appeal, remarks: “Myanmar is one of the most closed countries in the world, and generally doesn’t welcome international aid, but the monstrous earthquake has presented an opportunity for organisations such as Christian Aid to offer help to those whose lives have been devastated. Bishops’ Appeal always works with trusted partners on the ground and Christian Aid is one of those partners.”

Examples of aid are shared below to show how donations can make a direct difference:

Myanmar Earthquake 2025 - Photo Credit: Christian Aid

£50 / €61 could buy a food parcel for a family of five.

£140 / €170 could provide blankets, mattresses and alternative sources of heating material for a family of five.

£1,000 / €1,200 could fund emergency shelters for five families who’ve been made homeless.

£5,000 / €6,000 could buy food parcels for 100 families, meeting their urgent nutritional needs.

£10,000 / €12,000 could provide vital cash assistance so that 70 families can access shelter, food and safe drinking water.

Donations can be made directly through the Christian Aid Ireland website at this link.

Julie Mehigan, Christian Aid’s Head of Asia, Middle East and Europe, adds: “Even before this heartbreaking earthquake, we know conflict and displacement has left countless people in real need. Every prayer and every gift will bring hope to people hit by disaster.”

Christian Aid has shared the following prayer for Myanmar, to encourage intercession:

God, our strength and our refuge,

We pray to you for the people of Myanmar.

We hold in mind those who are injured or have been bereaved.

We ask your protection for everyone awaiting rescue.

May those who have lost homes and belongings be comforted.

May emergency workers and medical staff be safe as they pour their energy into saving the lives of others.

May the international community respond quickly to support those affected.

God, our strength and our refuge, Be with our global neighbours today.

Amen.

Pancakes and Prayer: Thank you so much for your support so far!

Pancakes and Prayer

As we crack on with Pancakes and Prayer through Lent, we want to thank every young person and youth leader taking part for helping children in South Sudan say: “I am educated, I am fed, I am safe and I am loved.”

That’s the aim of Fields of Life’s Thrive Programme which seeks to bring out the potential of children in Ibba and Maridi, two very remote parts of a country with many struggles, where many families regularly go without clean water, food and comforts we take for granted.

Your prayers and your giving really matters and makes a difference!

As Mothering Sunday comes closer (don’t forget it’s this Sunday, 30th March!), what about making treats after church on that special day? Or you can make a donation each time your youth group meets or when you go to school – maybe the same amount you would normally spend on drinks or snacks?

Food really matters to you, and to the kids and teenagers you are helping by giving up a little bit to make a difference. While our food comes from shops, children and young people in South Sudan often receive theirs from gardens at school … but a garden never grows overnight! All this takes time to train staff who can plant and look after crops and seedlings.

The money you give means that children in South Sudan are fed day after day, week after week and month after month. It will give them a better future long after Lent ends, and as you grow up too and discover your skills and abilities.

It costs about £8,000 per year (€10,000) to set up and keep a school garden going. Each one can feed up to 3,500 children for a year for less than €3 (£2.50) for each child.

Check out our latest video clips on CIYD’s Facebook and Instagram pages made by others who have been making pancakes and praying along with you.

Leaders can give donations from their youth groups and schools at https://store.ireland.anglican.org/donations/the-bishops-appeal
