Bill Seeks to Correct Clergy Pensions Anomaly

A Bill which seeks to correct and anomaly which has arisen in the calculation of late retirement pensions of clergy was presented at General Synod in Naas today (Friday May 9). Bill No 6 notes that a small number of members of the Church of Ireland Clergy Pensions Fund who had reached the normal retirement age (NRA) before 1st January 2024, but had not yet retired by that date, have not benefitted from recent increases to pensionable stipend or to pensions in payment. The proposed amendment to the Constitution will lead to late retirement pensions being calculated by using pensionable stipend at the date of retirement.

Glebe Agreements the Focus of Bill No 5

A Bill which proposes updates to the arrangement for glebes was presented at General Synod today (Friday May 9). At present, an incumbent must sign an acknowledgement or agreement ‘in reference to the glebe appropriated for that incumbent’s occupation or residence’ within two months of his or her institution or licensing. There is currently no constitutional requirement to return the signed copy of the agreement.

A Bill dealing with governance arrangements for Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, to prepare the Cathedral for its incorporation as a Company Limited by Guarantee passed its initial stages at General Synod in Naas today (Friday May 9).

Bill Ensures Consistency on Retirement Age of Archdeacons

A second Bill enabling consistency in the Constitution of the Church of Ireland was introduced at General Synod today (Friday May 9). Bill No 3 allows for cross–referencing so that the retirement age of archdeacons (which was last year was raised from 70 years to 75 years in line with the retirement age for clergy) is consistent throughout the Constitution.

Bill No. 2 Ensures Constitutional Consistency

A Bill which seeks to update the Constitution of the Church of Ireland to reflect two previously approved Bills has been presented at General Synod in Naas today (Friday May 9). Bill No.2 allows for updated referencing in the Constitution to reflect Bills passed in 2022 and 2024 to the effect that parochial nominators and diocesan synod members should be part of the parish for which they are elected to those respective roles.

A Bill to amend the Synod Representation Table in Chapter I of the Constitution to reflect the amalgamation of the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry with the Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe passed its first and second stages at General Synod this morning (Friday May 9).

General Synod 2025 Opens in Naas – Presidential Address Focuses on Leadership, Reconciliation and Solidarity

The Church of Ireland General Synod 2025 got underway this morning (Friday May 9) in Lawlor’s Hotel in Naas in the Diocese of Meath and Kildare. This is the first time Synod has taken place in the dioceses and it will continue tomorrow with an online session to follow on Tuesday evening.
